JANUARY
Iyal Arangam – 8 January 2026
The Iyal Arangam programme held on Thursday, 8 January 2026, began with a warm welcome address by our President, Mr A. Perumynar.
This was followed by an insightful and engaging talk by Mr Elango on Silapathikaram – The Story and Its Characters – Part 2
(சிலப்பதிகாரம் – கதை மற்றும் கதை மாந்தர்கள் – பகுதி 2). Continuing from his earlier presentation on 10 July 2025, Mr Elango shared valuable perspectives drawn from his deep understanding of the epic. The session was well received, with active participation and interaction from the audience throughout.
Lunch for the day was generously sponsored by Mr & Mrs Shanmugan and Mr Mohankumar. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by our Assistant Secretary, Mr R. Ratnakumar.
Thai Pongal Celebrations – 15 January 2026 – தைப் பொங்கல் விழா
The Thai Pongal celebrations (தைப் பொங்கல் விழா) commenced with a gracious welcome address delivered by our President, Mr. A. Perumynar.
This was followed by a melodious song composed by Mr Sathiyasingan and rendered by Mrs Sooriyakala Sathiyasingan. Thereafter, Dr. Bharathy Ilamuruganar recited a selection of poems authored by him in earlier years.
The highlight of the programme was an insightful and engaging address on the significance of Thai Pongal (தைப் பொங்கல்) in the Tamil cultural context, delivered by our esteemed special guest, Mr M. Thanabalasingam. The audience posed several questions on Thai Pongal (தைப் பொங்கல்), all of which were answered by Mr M Thanabalsingam with clarity, depth, and grace. His eloquent responses were warmly received and greatly appreciated by the audience.
The celebrations concluded with a formal vote of thanks proposed by our Secretary, Mr. C. Karunasaladeva
The Digital Mentor Program – Thursday – January 22, 2026
Today, our members had the pleasure of participating in the Digital Mentor Program conducted by Mr. Jagvir Singh. The program began with a warm welcome from our President, Mr. A. Perumynar and concluded with a thoughtful vote of thanks by the Secretary, Mr. C. Karunasaladeva. Lunch was generously provided by LeadConnect, the organisation Mr Singh represents.
Throughout the session, Mr. Singh covered a wide range of topics, including What Is a Digital Mentor, Inspiring People to Learn, Overcoming Barriers, Creating Inclusive Learning Spaces, Essential Digital Skills, Facilitating Discussions and Activities, and Resources for Digital Mentors. His dedication, patience, and clear guidance helped participants gain not only practical digital skills but also the confidence and sense of responsibility to share this knowledge with the wider community.
At the end of the program, all participants were awarded the Digital Mentor Certificate, and the session was recorded on video to serve as a valuable reference. Mr. Jagvir Singh’s expertise and commitment made the day both informative and truly inspiring, leaving a lasting impact on everyone present.
Comedy-Based Debate – Members’ Day Celebration – Thursday – January 29, 2026
Today, our Vice President, Mr K Ratnakumar chaired the comedy-based debate, warmly welcoming all six participants to the stage:
- Men’s side: Mr V Devendra, Mr F Rodrigo and Mr T Piraphakaran “- முன்னாள் கால வாழ்க்கை இனிமையானது”
- Ladies’ side: Mrs P Puruthothamar, Mrs P Thangarajah and Mrs S Suntharalingam-“இன்றைய வாழ்க்கை இனிமையானது”
The debate was expertly mentored by Mr. Thanabalasingam and began on a lively note, delighting the audience with humour and insight.
Following the debate, we had the honor of recognizing a distinguished Tamil scholar, Prof Eliyathamby Ambihairajah who recently received an AO on Australia Day. He, along with singer Dr. Rajayogan, entertained the audience with three delightful songs.
Prof. Ambihairajah then spoke about his career journey and accomplishments leading to the AO recognition, inspiring all present.

Thursday, February 05, 2026 – Isai Arangam
The Isai Arangam event began with a warm welcome address by the President, Mr. A. Perumynar. Several talented members participated, each performing a song of their choice, which was warmly appreciated by the audience. Duet songs were also performed by pairs of participants, and all the performances were truly outstanding.
Lunch for the event was generously sponsored by Mrs. Padma Thangarajah, Mr and Mrs Thirunavukkarasu. The Isai Arangam concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by the Assistant Secretary, Mr. R. Ratnakumar.
Thursday, February 12, 2026 – Arts and Crafts Day
Mr. Mahalingam entertained members with popular old songs accompanied by karaoke music while they awaited the arrival of the arts teacher.
Seventeen members, both ladies and men, participated in the art class conducted by Mrs. Sonia Kumar, while others engaged in indoor games and lively conversations.
Lunch was generously sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Mahalingam.

Thursday, March 05, 2026 – Outdoor games
Today we held our annual outdoor games at Airey Park, Homebush. It was a wonderful morning filled with fun, laughter, and friendly competition.
The events began with the 25m women’s race, followed by the 50m men’s race. This was followed by the spoon and lemon race for women and the book balance race for men. We then had an open relay race with three groups participating. The ever-popular musical chairs game was also enjoyed by everyone.
Special events were also held for our senior members:
• Walking/Running (Men – Above 85 Years)
• Walking/Running (Women – Above 80 Years)
Thank you to everyone who participated and supported the event. It was lovely to see such great enthusiasm and community spirit.
12 March, 2026 – Isai Arangam
The Isai Arangam event began with a warm welcome address by the President, Mr. A. Perumynar. Several talented members participated, each performing a song of their choice, which was warmly appreciated by the audience. All the performances were truly outstanding.

14 March, 2026 – Grandchildren’s Programme
Theme: Celebrating the Talents of Our Grandchildren
The Grandchildren’s Programme bringing together grandparents, families, and members of the community to celebrate the talents of their grandchildren.
The event began with the National Anthem, followed by the Welcome Address by the President and a speech by the Honourable Jason Li MP, Member for Strathfield.
The Secretary then introduced the Masters of Ceremonies, Abhina Shanmugapriyan (English) and Nithya Nimalan (Tamil), who conducted the programme smoothly.
The evening featured a variety of performances including speech, stand-up comedy, music, flute, dance, drama, and songs by the grandchildren of the Association members.
Finally Certificates of Appreciation and gifts were presented to all participants by former presidents Mr Suntharalingam, Mr Panchadcharam, and Mrs Suntharalingam.
The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks by the Secretary, expressing appreciation to the guest of honour, performers, organisers, and all who contributed to the success of the event.
19 March, 2026 – Video Presentation and Prize-Giving
Today’s event began with a warm welcome address by the president, Mr A Perumynar.
The Members enjoyed watching and listening to a lively presentation by Dr. Ganesalingam, who engagingly compiled dances and unforgettable songs from famous Indian film artists.
Following this, the annual prize-giving was held. Our special guests were Strathfield Councillor John Baladi and Dr A. Bala. They, along with the former presidents, distributed the trophies to the winners.

Thursday, 26th March 2026 – BENSOC’s Annual General Meeting
The Tamil Senior Citizens’ Benevolent Society (BENSOC) successfully held its Annual General Meeting (AGM), bringing together members to review the past year’s activities and discuss plans for the future.
The meeting commenced with a welcome address by the President, Mr. Ketharanathan, who highlighted the importance of unity, community support, and continued engagement among members.
During the meeting, key reports were presented, including the Treasurer’s Report by Mr. Thiru, outlining the Society’s financial position, as well as other updates on achievements and ongoing initiatives. Members were also given the opportunity to engage in discussions, provide feedback, and contribute ideas to support the continued growth and impact of the Society.
The AGM also included the appointment of trustees for the upcoming term, reinforcing the Society’s commitment to strong leadership and effective governance.
BENSOC’s Secretary, Mr. Sathyamoorthy, extends his sincere thanks to all members who attended and contributed to the meeting.
Thursday, 2nd April 2026 – Friendly Cricket Match & Trophy Presentation
Today’s friendly cricket match between the President’s Team and the Secretary’s Team took place at Airey Park this morning. The members’ presence and enthusiasm made the event truly enjoyable.
Following the match, trophies were distributed to all members of the winning team, and the Secretary proudly lifted the winning shield.
Members who were not interested in cricket spent their time playing cards and watching a movie in the community hall.
Thursday, 9th April 2026 – Easter Celebration 2026
We joyfully celebrated Easter on Thursday, 9 April 2026, bringing together members in a spirit of faith, reflection, and fellowship.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome address by President Mr. Arumugam Perumynar, followed by the opening prayer and announcements by Dr. Paul Gratien. The service continued with scripture readings from Mark 14:12–26, John 18:16–30, and John 20:1–18, recounting the passion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The congregation joined in uplifting hymns, including the Tamil hymn “Yuthar Rajasingam Uyirthelunthar” and the well-loved “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today.” A special highlight of the event was the moving choir presentation by the TSCA Choir, who rendered “Sothiram Yesu Natha” with devotion and harmony.
The Easter message was delivered by Rev. John Jegasothy, who shared an inspiring reflection on the hope and renewal symbolised by the resurrection of Christ. The service concluded with a benediction by Rev. John Jegasothy.
The event came to a close with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Secretary Mr. C. Karunasaladeva, expressing appreciation to all who contributed to making the celebration meaningful and memorable.
The Easter celebration was a blessed occasion that strengthened spiritual bonds and fostered a sense of unity among members.
Following the Easter celebration, Dr. Varagunan Mahadevan delivered an engaging and informative talk on seniors’ health, offering valuable insights for healthy living. This was complemented by a lively session of Tamil cinema songs, which brought joy and entertainment to the senior members and created a cheerful and relaxed atmosphere.
Thursday, 16th April 2026 – Tamil New Year Celebration 2026
The Tamil New Year celebrations began on a warm and auspicious note with a gracious welcome address delivered by our Secretary, Mr C. Karunasaladeva
The cultural segment featured soulful Tamil devotional songs presented by two young granddaughters, Ms. Shivanjali Ratnaseelan and Ms. Thuvaahini Ratnaseelan, whose melodious voices delighted and captivated the seniors. This was followed by a heartfelt Hindu devotional rendition by Mrs Susee Ganeshalingam.
The highlight of the programme was an insightful and engaging address on the significance of the Tamil New Year, delivered by our esteemed special guest, Mrs Kalayarasi Chinaiah, which enriched the audience with cultural and traditional perspectives.
Adding further interest to the occasion, Mr P. Panchadcharam shared his thoughts on the New Year’s astrological predictions, offering an intriguing glimpse into what the year ahead may hold.

Thursday, 23rd April 2026 – Accidental Counsellor Training
Today’s session began with a warm welcome address by the president, Mr A Perumynar.
Members of our association attended the Accidental Counsellor training, jointly organised by the Cumberland Tamil Society and STARTTS. The session proved to be highly informative and meaningful for all participants.
The training provided valuable insights into refugee trauma–related distress and equipped attendees with practical knowledge on how to support friends and family members experiencing such challenges. A key message of the session was that one does not need to be a professional or accredited practitioner to offer support to someone in distress. Participants also learned to recognise the symptoms of trauma and were guided on how to safely refer individuals to appropriate counselling services.
We sincerely acknowledge the contributions of the presenters, Ms Anushca and Ms Subadra from STARTTS, along with Ms Ursula Carer from the Gateway, Benevolent Society, for delivering engaging and informative sessions.
The event concluded with a delicious lunch generously provided by the Cumberland Tamil Society, offering participants an opportunity to connect and reflect on the day’s learning.
We also recognise that this important initiative was made possible through the support of the Australia Post grants program.
Overall, the training was a highly impactful experience, enhancing awareness and strengthening community capacity to support individuals experiencing trauma.
At the end of the session, we also had the pleasure of celebrating the 98th birthday of one of our members, Mr Nichollas Rajanayagam, which brought a joyful and memorable conclusion to the day.
